Dear friends of the Somerville Public Schools,
The School Committee will hold a Public Hearing regarding the possibility of charging fees for preschool programs on Monday, November 30 at 7:00 PM in the Library at Somerville High School. Anyone who wishes to speak to the School Committee and the public on this topic will have an opportunity to do so.
The School Committee has been discussing this issue since this spring, when the Superintendent presented the idea as a way to generate revenue to reduce cuts at a time when we are being forced to cut the school budget year-after-year due to the recession.
If this issue is important to you, I encourage you to attend and to share your point of view. If you are unable to attend, and you wish to share your views with the School Committee, please email me and I will forward your email to the rest of the School Committee and the Superintendent.
The School Committee will further consider this issue and discuss the input from the Public Hearing at a Finance and Facilities Subcommittee meeting on Wednesday, November 2nd at 7 PM at the School Administration building on the 3rd Floor in the Boys and Girls Club, 181 Washington St. in Union Square. The School Committee plans to make its decision on whether to charge preschool fees in the 2010-2011 school year at its televised meeting of December 7, 2009 at 7:00 PM in the Aldermans Chambers at City Hall. Both of these meetings are open to the public.
Yours,
Mark Niedergang
Vice Chair and Ward 5 Member Somerville School Committee
