O'Donovan Looking To End Four Loko Sales In Somerville

In two separate orders submitted onto tonight's agenda, Ward 5 Alderman Sean O'Donovan is looking to ban sales of the controversial alcoholic beverage, Four Loko, in Somerville.

The Orders:
Order By Ald. Desmond, O’Donovan
That the City Solicitor advise this Board as to the legality of banning the sale of Four Loko within the City and draft legislation to do so, if deemed permissable.

That the Director of Health work in conjunction with Somerville Cares About Prevention to contact all holders of off premise liquor licenses in the City of Somerville and request that they voluntarily remove all Four Loko alcoholic beverages from their shelves and commit to never stocking or selling the product in the future.

According to Wikipedia, Four Loko is: available in nine flavors: Citrus, Grape (Uva Berry), Fruit Punch, Orange Blend, Watermelon, Blue Raspberry, Lemonade, Cranberry Lemonade, and Lemon Lime. It is sold in the US in a 23.5 oz aluminium can, as a caffeinated, alcoholic, malt beverage. Its alcohol content varies from state to state, ranging from 6% ABV in Indiana[2] up to 12.5% in Ohio. It also contains carbonation, sugar, and natural and artificial flavoring, similar to other alcopops. This stuff is messed up. It's 12% grain alcohol and each one has the equivalent of 2 cups of coffee. It gives people heart attacks.
