Committee On Public Safety To Discuss Recent Water Contamination Letter, Other Items.

A recent letter regarding bacteria found in Somerville's water supply will be discussed at tonight's Committee meeting on Public Health and Safey. Item #190743 states, "That the Water Superintendent appear before this Board’s Committee on Public Health and Public Safety to discuss the recent letter to city residents concerning the water supply." Alderman-at-large and committee chairman, Bill White, will be looking for a full explanation on the letter that alarmed numerous residents, prompting a submission through the Board of Alderman at their January 27th meeting.

Also being discussed, will be Alderman Rebekah Gewirtz's January 27th submission of item #190750 stating, "That this Board requests that the Administration, the Police and this Board’s Committee on Public Health and Safety coordinate with the National Empowerment Center on training police officers responding to situations involving people with mental illness." Gewirtz referenced the Sycamore Terrace incident in which a mentally ill woman was fatally shot after stabbing Somerville Police Officers.

The other agenda items include item #190752 stating, "That the Chief Fire Engineer appear before this Board to report on any actions taken to avoid another situation with the fire hydrants like what happened on Fairfax Street" and item #190759 stating, "That the Chief of Police advise this Board of the overall training goals for all management personnel and patrol officers for the balance of the fiscal year."
