Reminder: City Clean-Up Scheduled For April 30th!



Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone announced today that the annual Somerville Spring Clean-Up will be held on Saturday, April 30th from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at locations throughout the City. The annual cleanup, sponsored by Xfinity, will be held in partnership with Groundwork Somerville. A rain date has been set for Sunday, May 1st.

Additionally, the community BBQ following the Cleanup will be held at the Blessing of the Bay Boathouse on Shore Drive, instead of at Nunziato Field and the Community Growing Center as in recent years.

Volunteers should meet a ward captain at 10:00 am at the following locations throughout Somerville:

Ward 1: Cross Street Senior Center, 165 Broadway and Capuano Early Childhood Center, 50 Glen Street
Ward 2: Union Square Parking Lot at SCAT Building  and Albert F. Argenziano School @ Lincoln Park, 290 Washington Street
Ward 3: City Hall Concourse, 93 Highland Ave and Nunziatio Field, Vinal Avenue
Ward 4: Blessing of the Bay Boat House, Shore Drive
Ward 5: Community Path at Cedar Street and Albion Street ParkWard 6: Davis Square, Statue Park
Ward 7: Teele Square Fire Station

Participants will receive a complimentary t-shirt, light snack, and a Mayor's Fitness Challenge Buck. This is also an opportunity for Mayor's Fitness Challenge participants to earn an extra point toward their individual and team total.

Following the Clean-Up, all participants are invited to attend the community BBQ and the 5th Annual SomerGreen Festival and Barbecue, which will be held at the Blessing of the Bay Boat House on Shore Drive. SomerGreen, an environmental education festival, is sponsored by Groundwork Somerville, the Growing Center, and the City of Somerville, and will feature organizations and community groups promoting green practices and strategies for healthy living.

The 2011 t-shirts and promotional materials feature a new "Somerville Spring Cleanup" logo designed by Somerville High School Junior, Krystal Elderd. Krystal is a student in the SHS Graphic Communications Department.

The City of Somerville is currently accepting donations for the event, including cleaning supplies, rakes, gloves and garbage bags. For more information about participating in the Clean-Up or making a donation, please contact Anna Ciccariello-Sherwood at 617-625-6600 x 2600.
