The Word Around The Ward...

Was it a City Hall reunion last Wednesday at Olde Magoun's Saloon? Numerous departments were seen dining at Magoun Square's fun place including OSPCD who conducted the business research on the square and presented it to residents and elected officials on May 25th. Brad Rawson, who presented the findings at the spring ResiStat meeting, stopped to chit chat and even complimented Ward 5 Online's postings that week. Thanks, Brad, I'll keep up the good work if you do!

Speaking of Magoun Square, big thanks goes out to Somerville Local First for giving this business district some love in their latest email blast. In their brand-new feature, On The Square, Magoun favorites such as Olde Magoun's Saloon, Lil' Vinny's Ristorante, Basil Tree, and Daniel Maher Stained Glass got shout outs and great write ups! This is the first for that section and I was proud and humbled to have the focus on Magoun. Thanks to Joe Grafton and his awesome staff for the attention to staying, loving, and shopping local!

Keeping with the great transitions, Dan Maher is still holding classes in stained glass artistry at his studio located in Magoun Square. Class descriptions are as follows: Stained Glass - Beginner: This course will focus on establishing sound fundamental skills in glass cutting techniques and assembling stained glass panels using the copper foil method. Students will learn panel design, pattern making, layout, types of glass, and types of framing while completing one or more projects. Open to all with little or no experience. 5 Mondays (8/1, 8/8, 8/15, 8/22, 8/29 ): 6-9 p.m. Cost: $250(includes glass). Intermediate: Photo Imaging in Stained Glass: This course will introduce the use of the Rayzist photosensitive sand blast resist method. The resist can be used to apply high-resolution photos, text or decorative patterns to stained glass. The process includes sandblasting and the pieces will be incorporated into small hanging stained glass panels. Pre- requisite: Previous course(s) or experience if making stained glass. 5 Tuesdays (8/2, 8/9, 8/16, 8/23, 8/30): 6-9 p.m. Cost: $250 (includes glass). Please contact Maher via phone 617-623-8600 or email dan@dmstainedglass.com for details and list of tools and supplies.

As expected, news came down the pipeline that Green Line Extension now delayed until 2018-2020. Progress at Somerville's major developments, including Maxwell's Green and Assembly Square, are not slowing down, showing signs that the city is moving forward, but they are not taking the news lying down. An online petition has been started by the city, so everyone can send the message that Somerville is ready for the Green Line! FYI, I am signatured number 125.

Ward 5 residents/newlyweds/Open Air Circus awesomeness, Peter Jehlen and Sarah Shugars, will be a part of the presentation under the big top at Nunziato Soccer Field-26 Vinal Ave (Corner of Vinal Ave and Summer St.)-as OPENAIR Theater Goes to Space! See approximately 200 kids (and several parents) show off skills they've learned this summer! $2 suggested donation. Showtimes are Friday Aug 5 at 7pm, Saturday Aug 6 at 2pm and 7pm, Sunday Aug 7 at 2pm. Check out the Facebook Invite Page for details! $2 donation...that's it!? Sweet!

Good friends and the all-around great guys of Save our Somerville will be holding a stick ball tournament at the Brown School (where Ward 5 Precinct 2 votes in Ward 6) on Saturday August 20th from 9am to 7pm. The First Annual Somerville Remembers Stickball Tournament is sure to be a great time! For more details, check out the Facebook Invitation Page.

Still no word on when the much anticipated "in house" meeting regarding business in Magoun Square will take place. Have no fear, however, this time will give the genuinely interested time to focus on OSPCD's report and come up with great ideas and initiatives for this area of Ward 5!
