The Word Around the Ward

There will be another meeting regarding changes that the Armory is seeking to be held on August 27th with a 6:30pm start time. It will be hosted by the attorney representing the arts establishment and will be held on location at 191 Highland Avenue.

The Board of Aldermen voted in favor of the Urban Agriculture Ordinance this week, opening the door for residents to truly reep the rewards of their farming skills. There are a lot of limitations associated with the ordinance and the city plans of publishing a pamphlet letting residents know all the details. I'm still pretty bummed that you can't have roosters.

Residents will have the opportunity to vote on whether the city should adopt the Community Preservation Act on the November ballot. This would place a surcharge on property taxes (Somerville is proposing 1.5%) and it will fund space protection, historic preservation, and affordable housing. More information will be posted on the topic in the coming weeks.

Whether you think it looks pretty or nice, the restriping of Magoun Square sure has made a nice change in the square. I feel safer driving up Lowell Street and not having drivers take the left onto the street in the wrong lane! Who knew a few white and yellow lines would make such a difference?

Huge congratulations to On The Hill Tavern for another successful golf tournament on Sunday. I stopped by and saw owners Bob and Tim setting up for their post-game raffle and free buffet for participants and patrons!

There will be another clean-up of Magoun Square tonight at 5:30pm and will cover the space between CVS and Henry Hanson park. Organizer Amy Timmins encourages everyone to bring plastic grocery bags and gardening tools. As always, they will finish off with some appetizers courtesy of Olde Magoun's Saloon.

On a personal note, I would like to thank everyone who offered their condolences for my cat, Lily, who was put to sleep a week ago after suffering a stroke. I posted only a few pictures of Lily on the website, but it was my Facebook profile that really introduced my 22lb Calico to the world. The over 100 correspondences filled with sympathy and personal stories of lost pets made dealing with her death so much easier. My most heartfelt thank you to all!

I think roosters are banned for noise reasons.

Just came driving through Magoun to lowell Street. Unless my eyes deceived me,the lights controlling traffic at that point, are now--FINALLY-- working full time.

About that petition in-favor of modifying several of the armory's original conditions of occupancy.

It is hoped that signers are required to also put their addresses to their names.

Some signatures to date show many out-of-towners signing.

Many, many, others showing cities/towns other than Somerville.
Others, a name only--absent any address.
