Thanks for Dinner, Mike :)

Given my new work schedule, it has been hard for me to maintain my regular appearances at local businesses and city meetings during the work week. I am finding myself prioritizing what I attend, lately, and making up for it on the weekends. Recently, I had made plans to pick up some products from Mike Dulock of M.F. Dulock Craft Butcher on Highland Avenue; however, a short stint in the Lawrence Memorial Hospital postponed my trip until last night.

The old saying, “good things happen to those who wait,” has always proved true in my life and last night was no exception. I made my way to Mike’s shop and was immediately impressed with how clean it was and the way he treated the customers in front of me. He was polite, informative and appreciative. He recognized me and we shook hands. I then stood back and watched him work. He chopped off two ribeyes fresh, a pot roast, sausages, and short ribs. He made it a point to give me cooking tips on the pot roast and packed them up, neatly, in a brown-handled bag. Of course, I made it a point to grab a couple of his business cards.

Heading home, I was reminded of why I love local businesses. Genuine, human interaction and attention to detail are something I am so appreciative of and will pay the extra money to get. I know I am not alone in my desire to keep my money local, but I also know that the word always needs to be spread further. To the local lovers, I say thank you! Whether it’s M.F. Dulock, On the Hill Tavern or attending DARBI’s Midnight Madness Shopping event in Davis Square tomorrow night, you are using your dollars to sustain and help grow a local economy. For that, I am eternally grateful! For those of you who shop corporate or elsewhere, try shifting your shopping a little at a time to help Somerville’s businesses remain successful and open right here where we need them!

You should give that picture to Mike, so he can use it as advertisement! Looks yummy!

Need to get back there. The beef was great as was the sausage. Need to try the lamb and pork.
