The Word Around the Ward

Can't a guy just resign and then get another job? Apparently, no...at least, not without causing a stir. Last week, Ward 1 Alderman Bill Roche resigned from the Board, citing changes in his family dynamic and a desire to spend more time with his grandchildren and aging father. However, conspiracy theorists are speculating that there is more to this story than what is being publicized. For a taste, check out the Ward 5 Online Facebook page and a Somerville News story comment section.

With Alderman Roche's announcement, as well as, the School Committee filling the seat of Maureen Bastardi (she has replaced Bill Roche as Ward 1 Alderman), the political landscape in Somerville is changing before there's even an election! Will Maureen run for the seat in 2013? Is everyone else who is considering running still considering? Who is running for School Committee in Ward 5? Alderman At Large? I'm thinking Santa's sleigh is too small to fit all the answers to these questions!

The School Committee did release their timeline to fill the Ward 1 seat and are taking suggestions!

Big congratulations to Aldermen At Large Bill White and Jack Connolly who will be leading the Board of Aldermen as President and Vice President for 2013!

The Grand Union Flag Raising will be held at 11am on January 1st at Prospect Hill Park. Check out the City's press release for all the details!

Thinking of celebrating the end of 2012 in Magoun Square? Daddy Jones Bar is putting together an 80's themed party, while Olde Magoun's Saloon will be their usual low-key spot for those of us who don't need the noise makers and party hats! There is always a place somewhere in the City for you to ring in 2013! Who needs Boston?

Be sure to send some monetary love over to Somerville Local First as they kick-start their annual fundraising season to keep one of Somerville's best organizations alive and financially well! Please note that SLF currently has a 501(c)3 filing application pending with the IRS. For tax deductible donations to SLF, you must donate to the Sustainable Business Network of Greater Boston, their fiscal sponsor and a 501(c)3 organization, and let them know the donation is for SLF in the Memo Section/Comments field.

Do you like the new parking meters in Magoun Square that accept credit cards? The word around the ward is that more are slated to be installed in the square making it easier for people to park and not have to worry about quarters. Also note, that the 2-hour parking alongside Trum Field has been removed as local business owners needed it for patron and employee parking. The Traffic and Parking Department will revisit the area for angled/head out parking in the Spring, rather than this winter.

Traffic has been flowing through the square fairly nicely thanks to newly painted lines and designated lanes. The only complaint that I have heard is that the light at Lowell Street does not let enough cars onto Medford. Hopefully, that can get adjusted as most find the light there convenient.

Congratulations to Jessica Lynch who won a $25 gift certificate to Olde Magoun's Saloon for being Ward 5 Online's 200th Facebook Page 'like!' Ward 5 Online will be doing more contests in 2013 with gift certificates to great Ward 5 locations as prizes!

Way too much her to digest in one post, Courtney! But I do wish Bill Roche and Maureen Bastardi luck in their retirement and promotion.

I see Fitzgerald losing again. He lost by over a thousand votes two years ago. Somerville News says Mike Capuano Jr is looking to get his hat in the ring. I hope he does. And Courtney OKeefe should run for ward 5 school committee! Would Joe Lynch run for alderman at large?
