The Word Around the Ward

Spotted... Ward 3 School Committeeman Adam Sweeting enjoying some appetizers with friends at Daddy Jones Bar in Magoun Square. Adam stopped me to confirm that he is not running for Ward 3 Alderman despite speculation here on Ward 5 Online.

SCAT TV has launched a brand new website that features a live stream of Channel 3 shows and class information!

Somerville Patch ran an article on the third candidate for Ward 5 School Committee this past week. Election season is creeping up and residents can expect Ward 5 to be bustling with activity as we have two of the earliest announced races in the city. Sean O'Donovan will face current School Committeeman Mark Niedergang for the Alderman's seat and three with be vying for the School Committee spot vacated by Niedergang. There are rumored Alderman At Large and Ward 3 Alderman races and definite races in Wards 1 and 7. No Mayoral candidates have been rumored.

Spotted... Alderman at Large Jack Connolly running in the recent Rás na hÉireann this past Sunday along with 4600 other road racers. Alderman Connolly has been an advocate in pairing Somerville with the Irish Community through his sponsorship of this race, as well as, the Irish Film Festival that runs city wide. Also mentioned on the back of this year's race shirt were Alderwomen Maryann Heuston and Rebekah Gewirtz, as well as, Aldermen Bob Trane, Sean O'Donovan, Dennis Sullivan, Mayor Joe Curtatone and former Ward 1 Alderman Bill Roche. Ball Square's The Pub and Magoun Square's On the Hill Tavern and Olde Magoun's Saloon were also listed as sponsors. Proceeds from the race, $10K, were presented to the Somerville High School Track Team who also assisted with bib pickups and race day activities.

White smoke alerted Catholics around the world that the conclave had made a decision as to who their next leader would be. Not too long afterwards, Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Buenos Aireswho appeared on the balcony and has chosen the name Francis I.

I must say that I'm impressed that the conclave took less time to choose their Pope than the School Committee did to choose a Representative for Ward 1.
