The Word Around the Ward

Saturday March 1st marked the official retirement date for Mario Oliveira. Last summer, the Board of Aldermen approved the retirement package for the hero-police officer who wrote on his Facebook page, "Thank you to all that had my back during serious calls and thank you for all the funny and fond moments we shared. I hope that all Law Enforcement officers make it home to their loving families at the end of every tour of duty!! God Bless and in my heart I'll always be a Somerville Police Officer!" I would like to wish Mario the best on his retirement and hope that I see him around the Ville soon.

The Davis Square Vintage Flea will be returning to Ward 5 on Sunday March 16th from 11am-5pm at the Armory. The flea features many vendors of vintage sports, music and clothing items-just to name a few. More details will be posted on the website as the date approaches.

Did you donate blood yesterday at the Armory? If you are a Ward 5 resident, please feel free to send me any pictures taken to be posted in a public 'thank you' on Ward 5 Online.

The Board of Aldermen will be holding a Special Meeting on March 13th to discuss a 129-signature petition to divest Retirement Pension money out of Fossil Fueled companies. The meeting starts at 6:00pm in the Aldermanic Chambers of City Hall.

Spotted in Ward 5 was Mayor Emeritus Gene Brune sipping coffee at Dunkin Donuts. It's always nice to see Gene in the neighborhood!

Could a popular Magoun Square eatery be expanding into new territory? Do stay tuned as Ward 5 Online reveals all the details about a new refreshing option that will be making its debut this Spring.

Oh, I didn't think to take a photo during the donation. Well, I did consider it--but all I could really see was the ceiling. You could have this one though: http://screencast.com/t/vHuPTMiJW

Why not Mayor Brune sighted there; he and his mother, father, brothers, sister were "Gouners" from the get-go.

They lived in the white single family house on the northwest corner of Richardson Street and attended the Bingham Grammar School on Lowell Street. Later the family moved to Wallace Street.

Jerry (Jerome)his brother, one of my best friends, died all too young.
